The Geo Energi Centre has a diverse research structure, where it focuses on various areas including transport phenomena in porous media, geothermal energy, CO₂ sequestration, upgrading techniques, water and soil remediation, and modeling at both pore and field scales, incorporating AI and high-performance computing (HPC) to enhance simulation capabilities.

By addressing energy challenges from multiple scientific and engineering perspectives, the Centre delivers a comprehensive approach to problem solving.

Industry and societal demands may sometimes be conflicting. The Centre’s goal is to find commonalities between those demands to align them. The Centre has a focus on environmentally responsible and efficient hydrocarbon production in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. It also contributes to alternative energy development, including geothermal and other geoenergy applications, with projects extending beyond Alberta to provinces such as British Columbia.

In carbon storage, Alberta is uniquely positioned to store Canada’s carbon emissions for centuries, and the Centre’s research in this area supports our national climate and energy objectives. Additionally, the Geo Energi Centre is engaged in residential geoenergy heating projects, geothermal technology development with industry partners, international collaborations in sustainable geoenergy, and leadership roles in oil and gas and enhanced oil recovery consortia.
